Frequently asked questions
There are commonly three different types of urinary incontinence:
Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) is the involuntary loss of urine as a result of increased intra-abdominal pressure due to effort or exertion (such as sneezing/coughing). SUI is associated with weakness in the pelvic floor muscles, impeding their ability to fully control the pelvic organs under periods of increased pressure.
Urge Urinary Incontinence (UUI) is an involuntary leakage of urine accompanied by a sense of urinary urgency. As with any form of incontinence, urge urinary incontinence is usually related to weak pelvic floor muscles which make it difficult for the muscles to hold on as long.
Mixed incontinence being a combination of both stress and urge incontinence.
Some common signs that may indicate you have weak pelvic floor include:
Involuntarily leaking urine during exercise, laughing, coughing or sneezing
A frequent need to get to the toilet quickly (or not getting there in time)
Constantly needing to go to the toilet
Difficulty emptying your bladder or bowel
Loss of control of your bladder or bowel
Involuntary flatulence
Prolapse and a feeling of heaviness, bilge or discomfort in the pelvic area
Pain in the pelvic area
Pain during sexual intercourse
Urinary incontinence can be a persistent condition caused by underlying physical problems or changes, including:
Pregnancy
Childbirth
Changes with age
Menopause
Enlarged prostate
Prostate cancer
Obstruction of the urinary tract
For women, prolapse may be noticed as a bulge in the vagina or a feeling of heaviness, discomfort, pulling, dragging or dropping in this area
For men, prolapse may be felt as a bulge in the rectum or a feeling of wanting to empty the bowels without actually needing to
